The construction project for the 7.2-kilometer Kajaran tunnel, one of the key facilities on the southern section of the North-South Highway, has officially begun in Armenia.

The ceremony was attended by Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan, Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure David Khudatyan, Iranian Vice President Seyed Hamid Pourmohammadi, Arkadi Cherchinyan representatives of the diplomatic corps, members of the National Assembly, and other officials.

Before the ceremony, participants visited two already constructed tunnels on the 32-kilometer Kajaran-Agarak section, where they were briefed on the progress of construction.
Following this, an agreement was signed for the construction of the Kajaran Tunnel, which will be carried out by a consortium of Iranian companies, Abad Rahan Pars International Group and Tunnel Sadd Ariana.

The project will shorten the existing route by approximately 14 km, increase the average speed from 50 to 80 km/h, and reduce travel time by approximately 40 minutes. The new tunnel will also bypass the Meghri Pass, located at an altitude of 2,535 meters above sea level, improving road safety and eliminating seasonal travel difficulties in winter.

The construction is being financed by a $200 million loan from the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development and co-financing from the Armenian government of approximately $195 million.

Construction will begin in 2026 and is expected to be completed within six years.

In addition to the tunnel, the project will also include the construction of approximately 4 km of access roads. The tunnel will have two traffic lanes, sidewalks, emergency stops every 250 meters, and an emergency exit.
